Kingston Pride Parade 2024

Victoria and Valerie, along with RBC colleagues from various divisions, came together in June to participate in the Pride Parade, showing their support for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. The group had a table set up in front of the branch on Princess Street, handing out pride-themed paper fans, temporary tattoos, and candy before the parade commenced. During the parade, you could see their RBC-branded rainbow flags and signs waving above the crowds.

Employee Giving

Victoria is the current RBC Employee Giving Champion in our area, organizing several community-giving activities throughout the year, encouraging colleagues to participate and to donate to worthy causes across our region. Since taking on this important role in the Fall of 2023, Victoria has organized clothing drives for both Dress for Success Kingston and Well Suited Kingston, a toy drive for Toy Mountain, and volunteer groups at Partners in Mission Food Bank to put together food baskets, Martha’s Table to serve a Christmas lunch to those utilizing their services, and at Kingston Humane Society to clean various staff areas within the facility. Rudy, Shawn, Stephanie and Valerie are always there to support Victoria in her efforts, whether it be with their time or donations.

Fighting Food Insecurity

In January 2024, Valerie and Victoria, along with Victoria's husband PJ and son Reed, had the opportunity to join close to 100 other volunteers to package 14,500 nutritious “rice meal packs”. The life-sustaining meals were distributed to various schools in the region as well as local charities, like the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Kingston, and the Partners in Mission Food Bank. The collaborative effort was made possible by Kids Against Hunger, the Food Sharing Project, Rotary Kingston, and Lionhearts Kingston.

MS Walk

Annually, Stephanie joins the team Little Creek, Big Steps to walk in support of Multiple Sclerosis. The walk is focused on raising funds to make a difference for everyone living with MS, helping them make life a little easier and bringing us that much closer to a cure. Alongside family and friends, she completes the 5k walk in Napanee at the home of her very good friend, who’s dad and brother both live with MS. An estimated 90,000 Canadians live with MS and, on average, 12 Canadians are diagnosed with MS every day. For more information and to join the movement you can visit MS Walk.

Partners in Mission Food Bank - Rudy Spurr, Board Chair

Rudy volunteered to become a member of the board in 2018 and chaired the nominating committee shortly after joining. In 2022, he was then asked to chair the board and has remained in that position since. The PIMFB Heroes of Hunger are a dedicated group of volunteers who donate their time helping us tackle food insecurity. These volunteers build food hampers, help in the office, distribute food at our pick up windows and help govern our organization.

Hockey Team Sponsorships

Spurr & Clarke Wealth Partners sponsor the rep hockey teams of Rudy’s sons, Grayson and Beckett, each year. During the 2023-2024 season, the KAMHA Canadians U15A (Grayson’s team) and U12AA (Beckett’s team) teams both did sock drives in support of St. Vincent de Paul Society of Kingston.

Shawn Clarke, the Basketball Coach

Shawn’s daughter, Grace, is following in her dad’s footsteps with her passion for basketball. When Grace’s Kingston Impact U10 Competitive Girls team, consisting of 8-10 years olds, needed someone to step up to coach, Shawn was there to answer the call. The 2023-2024 took the team to tournaments in Ottawa, Smiths Falls, Brockville and Belleville. Fun Fact: This was the first season Kingston has had U10 competitive basketball teams.

Shawn went on to co-coach the U12 Girls team in the Kingston Impact Spring League, also acting as the convener, and pulling triple duty by coaching in a new player development program called “Art of the Game”, which is for girls in grades 4-8. Grace also participated in this program as a Grade 3.

The Secret 3K

Big Bike for Heart & Stroke 2021

Due to the restrictions this year, RBC Retail Banking and RBC Dominion Securities employees were not able to team up for our annual Big Bike ride in support of Heart & Stroke. Instead, it became a virtual event where participants could ride, run or walk while, more importantly, still raising funds for the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Victoria, along with two of her colleagues, walked over 6 kilometres in a heart-shaped route. Team RBC Dominion Securities (Kingston) together raised a total $1,643 for world-class research.

Terry Fox Run 2020

This year, Victoria and her puppy, Harley, ran 4.2kms through the beautiful Inverary scenery in support of the Terry Fox Foundation. She was able to raise a total of $700 with her efforts for this worthwhile cause.

"The Terry Fox Foundation was excited to announce that Canadians would be able to continue to support cancer research through Virtual Runs from coast to coast to coast this September. Terry once said, “Anything is possible if you try.” 40 years later, the foundation would have to innovate as well – they couldn't think of anything that Terry would appreciate more."
